Overview

DAY 01. LHASA (3560m) – NYINTRI (2900m). 429km, 6hrs drive.

Attractions; Lonely nomad tents near Mila Pass, the fertile valley of Nyintri along the Nyiyang River, and Lamaling monastery.

We will leave Lhasa around 7 or 8 in the morning for Nyintri as there are several speed-limiting checkpoints along the road and traverse the Mila pass(5000m). Further, driving into the valley drops the altitude and helps the prevention of altitude sickness.

At the same time, the beautiful valley with thick forest and clear rivers finally lead you to Nyitri town, a number of typical photogenic villages lined along the route. Upon our arrival in Nyitri, we check into the hotel and visit Lamaling monastery.

It is the seat of Dudjom Rinpoche who is the former head of the Nyingmapa sect (one of the four sects of Tibetan Buddhism). The original monastery was on top of the ridge of the hill and it was destroyed by an earthquake and then later it was built down at the foot of the hill. The octagonal main temple has been wonderfully restored and rises through four stories. Then continues rest and acclimatize. Overnight in Nyintri.

DAY 02. NYINTRI – BASUM LAKE – LHASA. 519km, 7hrs drive.

Attractions; Stunning view of Basum Lake and Tsokyil monastery on the island, beautiful mountain views around the lake.

Today we will drive along the Nyanchu River upstream, within the alpine valley we will pass by a number of villages, and en route we will drive to Basum Lake which is about 50km turn-off from the main road, apart from the sheer beauty of the lake it is connected with semi-mythical king of the Kham-King Gesar and Indian abbot Guru Rinpoche.
There are also several folk stories about the surrounding snow-capped peaks, walk across the board floating bridge to visit the historical Nyinmapa monastery amid the island. Afternoon we will trace back to the main road and continues driving west, crossing over the Mila pass(5000m) and it will gain several hundred meters in altitude.
Gradually, you will feel the dry plateau climate and the bare mountains are the real features of central and western Tibet. Further, drive along the Lhasa River, and you will be impressed by a glimpse of Potala Palace from the distance perched up from the rest of the city. Overnight in Lhasa.
