Legend says that if the lake should ever dry up, Tibet will become an uninhabitable wasteland. The Kumbum is a 32-meter high stupa that is the only one of its kind in Tibet.

After the visit to Gyantse, you will continue on to Shigatse, home to the Tashilhunpo Monastery. The monastery is the seat of the Panchen Lama, Tibet’s second highest incarnation. Shigatse is the Second city of Tibet and lies at the confluence of the Yarlung Tsangpo River and the Nyang River. After spending time touring the monastery and the city, you will be driven back to Lhasa along the Friendship Highway.

Instead, your guide will take you along the Friendship Highway even further, to the town of Gyirong, around 24 kilometers from the Nepali border. After a night’s rest, mostly because the border closes at 5 pm, you will be taken to the new border crossing at Gyirong Port, the main crossing point for trade and tourists between Nepal and China.

The border checkpoint at Gyirong Port, after you have exited Chinese immigration, opens out onto the Resuo Bridge, which spans the Trishuli River Gorge, the natural boundary between China and Nepal. Once you have walked across the bridge and obtained your visa on arrival at Nepali immigration, you will be able to get a car, shuttle, or bus to the exotic capital of Kathmandu.

The route to the capital city of Nepal drops down from the Himalayas, through the Langtang National Park, and it takes around 6 hours to make the trip to Kathmandu and the rest of your vacation.
