Tibet Travel News : Landslides and Heavy Rainfall Cause Disruption Along Nepal-China Border

Kathmandu, Nepal – July 8, 2025

Heavy rainfall overnight triggered landslides and flash floods along the Nepal-China border, causing significant damage to infrastructure and disrupting travel. On the Nepali side, a vital bridge was washed away, severing a key transportation link in the region.

Local authorities reported that the flooding also damaged nearby roads, leaving communities temporarily isolated.

“Rescue teams are assessing the situation, and alternative routes are being arranged for essential travel,” said a district official. “No casualties have been reported so far, but the damage to infrastructure is severe.”

This incident highlights the vulnerability of Himalayan border areas to extreme weather events, which have become more frequent due to climate change. Both Nepal and China are working to reinforce infrastructure to mitigate future risks.

Travel Advisory:

  • Traveling from Nepal to Tibet overland from the Kyirong border requires a change in route.
  • Avoid non-essential travel to affected areas.
  • Monitor local news and official updates for road conditions.
  • Expect to change routes from the Tatopani-Zhangmu border crossing.

Further updates will be provided as rescue and repair efforts continue.
