The Mesmerizing Namtso Lake Tour

If you are an avid traveler with a curiosity if the legendary utopia of Shangri-La really existed, the mysterious Namtso Lake in Tibet is the closest clue to your puzzle.

Namtso literally means the Sky Lake; the name is believed to have originated from the beautiful attribute of sky-blue color of the lake, and the very location of the lake at such a high altitude on the roof of the world. It is considered to be one of the holy lakes of Tibet.
The mysterious lake lies at an altitude of 4,718 m (15,479 ft), and has a surface area of 1,920 km2 (740 sq mi). Namtso is one of the highest lakes in the world with stunning beauty. The cave hermitages of the Lake have for centuries been the destination of Tibetan pilgrims. And nowadays it is gaining growing attraction among tourists from abroad as well as from Mainland China.

The holy lake has five uninhabited islands of considerable size, on the top of one or two rocky outcrops. The largest of the islands is in the north-west corner of the lake, and is about 2,100 m (6,900 ft) long and 800 m (2,600 ft) wide, rising to just over 100 m (330 ft) in the middle. The closest point to the lake is about 3.1 km (1.9 mi) from the shore.

Due to the topographical condition of the region, the weather at Namtso is liable to sudden change and snowstorms are very common across the region, which is adjacent to Nyainchen Tangla Range.

With its unique beauty, in the recent years the mysterious lake has become a popular site for film-shooting for several domestic production houses. The purpose was to showcase a Shangri-La-like place to the audience.

Namtso is barely about 112km from Lhasa and it is very accessible by land route. With the help of a decent Tibetan guide, Namtso Lake is surely going to be one of the most beautiful natural sites your eyes will see.
