Kyirong – The new entrance from Nepal into Tibet – Tibet travel news
Kyirong (Kyidrong, as some call it), like Zhangmu and other humid parts of Tibet, is, as the name reveals, a very happy border town, located in the south of Tibet in Shigatse prefecture. Isolated in a beautiful valley in the Himalayan Range, Kyirong is one of Tibet’s least-known beauties, though not much for its culture or historic sites. But they do have some of the most famous hot springs in Tibet, and one of the least traveled sites of Tibet, the travelers going there are mostly people in business going for their merchandise come across the border port.
The Kyirong port didn’t let travelers through about a year ago, but now, with the Zhangmu border port closed because of the Nepal Earthquakes in April 2015, Kyirong port will open for tourists, both foreign and domestic. Now, all the overland tour from Kathmandu to Lhasa will be through Kyirong, and the valley will be seen more for its untouched beauty and known for a touch of delight it adds to your Tibet tour.
Explore Tibet will keep you updated with all the progress about Kyirong regarding the confirmation of its opening for traveling and our new itineraries for you entering Tibet from Kyirong.
