Explore Tibet Announces Train Tour

Explore Tibet, a Lhasa-based tour company, has announced an eleven-day Tibet train tour through the Tibetan plateau from Xining to Lhasa.

The journey begins in Xining, provincial capital of Qinghai in Western China, which is an ideal base for exploring nearby Koko Nur Lake. Located on the Tibetan plateau, Koko Nur is the largest saltwater lake in China, as well as crossroads of several bird migration routes across Asia. In the western part of the lake is an island with a temple and hermitages, which historically were home to a Buddhist monastery. The lake is also sometimes circumambulated by pilgrims from the region.

From Xining, the journey continues through the Kekexilin Wildlife Reserve and the Changtang plateau of western and northern Tibet.

A land of high rolling hills interspersed by mountains over 6,000 metres high and giant lakes, Changtang stretches from Ladakh in India, across northern Tibet into Qinghai province, and into the Nanshan mountains of Xinjiang province. It is also home of the Changpa nomads. The Changtang Nature Reserve, second largest nature reserve in the world, is home to some of the last remaining herds of wild yak and Mongolian gazelle.

“The journey offers spectacular views of snowcapped peaks and glaciers,” Explore Tibet have said. Tourists will also have the opportunity to see endangered wildlife, including the Tibetan antelope, and lone nomad families dwelling in black tents and scattered villages in the isolated Changtang.

“Your arrival at the holy city of Lhasa will be greeted by its fair blue sky and a glimpse of Potala palace,” Explore Tibet have said. “In the following days, you will be overwhelmed by mystical buildings and temples which reflect the rich culture and tradition of the ancient city.”
