Explore Tibet Announces 8-Day Overland Tour to Mt. Everest
2013-01-23

We introduce a new 8-day overland trip to Mt. Everest. “This trip is one of the most popular adventure tours in the world,” Explore Tibet said. “The route crosses the mighty Himalayas with panoramic views of the world’s highest peaks.”

The Tibet tour begins in Lhasa, where travelers will visit the famous religious and cultural sites of the Tibetan capital. Highlights of Lhasa include Potala Palace, the ancient Jokhang Temple, and nearby monasteries Drepung and Sera.

The overland tour to Mt. Everest makes stops at holy Yamdrok lake, the beautiful Karo-la glaciers, the famous Kumbum stupa in the ancient trading town of Gyantse, and the Tashilhunpo monastery in the city of Shigatse. The route follows the Friendship Highway that runs from Lhasa to Kathmandu, Nepal.

Near Everest the route stops at the small town of Tingri which boasts spectacular views not only of Mt. Everest, but also three of the six highest mountains in the world: Mt Lhotse, Mount Makalu, and Cho Oyu. In Tingri the tour leaves the Friendship Highway and goes into the Rongbuk Valley.

Rongbuk Monastery, at an altitude of about 5,000 meters, is the highest monastery on earth, with spectacular views of Everest. It belongs to the Nyingma sect, the oldest of the four schools of Tibetan Buddhism. Shrines within the monastery are devoted to Sakyamuni, also called simply Buddha, and Guru Rinpoche, the sage guru responsible for the spread of Buddhist teachings throughout Tibet in the 8th century.

Expeditions to Mt. Everest pass through the Rongbuk Monastery and make their base camp near the Rongbuk Glacier, located about 8 kilometers southwest of the monastery. The EBC in Tibet, also called the North Base Camp, is at an elevation of 5,150 meters. The “tourists’ base camp” located at a distance from the climbers’ base camp is accessible by vehicle. The tour continues south and ends in Kathmandu.
