Derge monastery in Kham is also known as Gonchen Gompa. One of the large Sayka monastery in Kham region of Tibet. Gonchen monastery was erected in 1385-1464 by Thang Tong Gyalpo, we popularly utter him as Chakzampa because he was the first iron chain maker in Tibet and he made 58 the iron bridge around Tibet and Bhutan. He is also known as a great Buddhist Yogis, physician, blacksmith, architect, and a pioneering civil engineer. Derge Monastery or Gonchen Gompa is one of the most popular and largely practicing Buddhism teaching in the Kham region and many disciples seeks blessing and teaching from the monastery in that region of Tibet. The great Derge Pharkhang is just below the monastery and very antique handicraft is still carrying on. Derge Pharkhang was built in 1729.
