Explore Tibet, a Lhasa-based tour company, is offering Everest base camp trekking adventure trips to Lhamo Latso, one of Tibet’s most sacred lakes. The 13-day trek will also include a visit to Tibetan capital Lhasa.
Southeast of Lhasa, Lhamo Latso is at an altitude of 5,300 meters. A small oval lake, and said to be the most sacred in Tibet, it is where senior Tibetan monks go for visions to assist in the discovery of reincarnations of the Dali Lamas.
“This is one of Tibet’s most unexplored trekking regions, hiding its beautiful scenery in remote locations,” Explore Tibet have said. “But due to its prominent religious value in Tibetan Buddhism, hundreds of Tibetans make their pilgrimage there every year.”
Travellers will trek through nomadic pastures and photogenic villages, crossing several passes above 5000m. The trail passes by a number of historical monasteries and then finally climbs over a steep ridge from Chokor Gyal monastery to a viewpoint marked with prayer flags.
“The 5250m viewpoint offers a picturesque view of the turquoise coloured visionary lake Lhamo Latso in the bottom of the basin valley,” Explore Tibet have said.
Many pilgrims come each year to the lake, believing that, with proper devoutness, and after fasting for three days and refraining from talk, they will be rewarded with a revelation of their future in the skull-shaped mirror of the lake.
There is a pilgrimage walk around the lake.
